Recuerdo el preciso momento en el que escuché este disco. Sería el año 96 y viajaba en un vagón de metro de los antiquísimos que antes rodaban por las vías de la Línea 5 del Metro de Madrid (en realidad los debieron cambiar como en el 2000 o algo así, una pasada). Iba con dos amigos de la ciudad dormitorio donde crecí, Javier Terry (que tenía un grupo llamado Red Shift de hardcore) y Amir (que tenía un grupo llamado Ciudad Juárez que a mí siempre me pareció la pera, en plan Sunny Day Real Estate). Íbamos, recuerdo, a alguna velada de hardcore de las que se celebraban en la difunta sala Trylobite que estaba en Ventas. El caso es que Terry llevaba este disco en cassette y me lo pasó. Las tres primeras canciones me volaron la cabeza. Estaba entrando en un terreno desconocido para mí y que acabaría por marcar mi vida desde entonces: el post-hardcore y el emo; el indie rock, al fin y al cabo.Yo no sabía ni quién era Jay Robbins, ni la importancia de su figura en la escena de Washington ni nada de nada.
Le pedí la cinta prestada para escucharla mejor en casa. Y Javi Terry se quedó sin cinta para siempre.
JAWBOX
Jawbox played their first show opening for Fugazi in 1989. Jawbox was highly organized and ready to work, and the band immediately set out touring and recording. They released their first single on the Desoto/Dischord split label in 1990. Bassist Kim Coletta borrowed the Desoto label name from another DC band, Edsel, on which to release the Jawbox single. Ultimately she inherited the name and, along with J. Robbins and Bill Barbot, turned it into a full-fledged label. Jawbox released two records on Dischord, "Grippe" and "Novelty", and toured heavily throughout the early 90's. The industry had become quite taken with the underground music scene at that time and were particularly attracted to bands like Jawbox, who were proven not only by their popularity, but by their work-ethic and autonomy. In 1993 Jawbox left Dischord to sign with Atlantic Records and went on to release two more albums, "For Your Own Special Sweetheart" and "Jawbox" before breaking up four years later.
NOVELTY
The 12" LP is out of print. However, the CD, Digital MP3s (with 3 extra songs from The "Tongues" 7 Inch) and Cassette are still available
